CSHL Newsletter #8: Eight Days Until the Dance

CSHL welcomes (back) Ethan Pinto to our Board of Directors, this time as our newest Chief Financial Officer!

Ethan served a partial term as CSHL's Secretary from Nov. 2022 through July 2023, making way for Mike Lafond as our new Secretary. Ethan replaces Frank Lozzi, whose 2 year term expired in September. We are excited to begin implementing Ethan's ideas for continued growth within our organization!

CSHL would like to thank Frank Lozzi for his tenure serving on the board. During Frank's time as CFO, we brought on Sports Engine as our new website, we adjusted and updated our insurance policies, we updated the way we file our taxes, and we incorporated QuickBooks into our operations. Among other things, Frank also was a key component in kicking off Charlotte's NBHL presence, partnering with Josh Greco in establishing the first ever NBHL Charlotte team - the Queen City Crowns - going on to win not only the Carolina Division, but also the first ever Tier 3 Mylec Cup in 2022. Frank also oversaw CSHL's first ever roller league, paving the way for the creation of the Roller Hockey Director position, now held by Haley Gourdie.

We wish Frank the best of luck as he continues his non-profit endeavors, being named recently as the President of Camp Twitch and Shout, a non-profit summer camp for children ages 8-17 diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome and Tic Disorders!

CSHL Playoff Hockey is 8 days away! This was our penultimate week of the season for 7/9 teams. Longer playoff preview blog next week, so let's dive into the action.

GOTW followed by some Words from Worters^tm

*No GOTW video this week, working on something cool for playoff week one

This week's "Game of the Week" is another barn burner between the Huntersville Hooligans and JJ's Bombers. Despite a standout performance from captain Mike Campbell, the Bombers would fall short to the Hooligans 6-4. Beyond his one goal and three primary assists, Campbell registered 5 shots, 6 shot attempts, and one block. This would set the record for CSHL Game Score with a total of 26 points. Talk about setting the example.

Campbell's efforts were trumped by the dynamic duo of Zach McKenna and Frank Lozzi, who each recorded 20+ Game Score for the Bomber's, a feat that has not yet been accomplished since the introduction of Game Score. Zach McKenna proved his two-way ability this week, recording a game high three blocks. Beyond those three, the Hooligan's seemed to have the stronger bench, with Connor Malmstrom, James Forbes, and Jayden Steckler each leaving their mark in the game. Outside of Josh Greco (who is wearing #89 this season in honor of his favorite player, Kevin Worters), the Hooligans dominated this week's Scorecard, having 5 of the top 7 players. The Bomber's will need more from Caleb Brownlow (who has had an impressive season to date) and company if they wish to make a run in the playoffs.

ANOTHER goalie swap! This time for the Cowbell making it three (along with High Voltage & Fridge Raiders) of our nine adult league teams who have voluntarily changed their netminder as Cole Heslin threw on the pads for the first time as 1.01 pick Chris Napierala moved to forward. The Cowbell looked noticeably more well-rounded as their first 2 goals were scored by Terjesen & Nappy with assists from the famous Jesus and Bowser duo. The big frontcourt duo of Kerr & Mahoski scored, but the severely shorthanded NorMonsters couldn’t hold on as the Steckler household put the nail in the coffin accounting for the Cowbell’s last three.

We saw CSHL INSIDER DAWG of the Week Nora Castillo go down HARD in the second(?) on incidental contact from Kendall.

They recovered strong ringing one off the inside post with a snipe off a one-timer in the second. While CSHL Insider can confirm the long-term repercussions of concussions are bad, the short-term results look positive..

It’ll be interesting to see what Waymer Cowbell does in the playoffs as Nappy was drafted as a goalie but played out this week as he did for the Queen City Crowns this NBHL season. Speaking of goalies, LaFond had quite the LaSave on Nappy this weekend...

Congrats to star prospect Cole Heslin on his first win as a goalie, we'll see if he gets a chance for another in the playoffs.

Full strength, James Borruso in net, High Voltage DOMINATED this one. Previous POTW Carson Philemon was overwhelmed and we saw six different goal scorers for the Voltage as Rios, Guia, Yasav, Big John, Nick Lavella & Carriero put one home in that order. The sole bright spot for the Charlottans was the father-son combination of Joey & Joe P. We’ll see a repeat of this matchup on Sunday as these teams play for first place in our CSHL’s B Division.

Waymer Cowbell jumped out ahead for the lead then got absolutely smoked by High Voltage here.

Big John Lavella had a huge game with 1G and 3A while captain Tom Carriero had one of each in their second bloodbath of the day. Big John Lavella earned himself his first CSHL INSIDER B Division Player of the Week Award with his 2G 4A performance over the weekend. This was the High Voltage roster we were expecting to see after the draft, they have the best group of runners in the division and are by far the most athletic of all the B teams. If their goaltending cna hold up in the playoffs, watch out.

We’re not going to put much into the NorMonsters poor performance this weekend since they only had four runners from their normal roster. The Charlottans looked great as Nick Petrini had his second hat trick of the season reaping the benefits of Jeff Kennedy completely ignoring Jenny so he could pass her in the points standings. Kennedy put up 4 points himself with 1G 3A in this one. CSHL Adult League Commissioner (and six time CSHL Adult League Champion, most recently with CDI) Tom Ward scored his first goal of the season a few seconds into the...second.

Week 8 matchup to watch: High Voltage at Charlottans - High Voltage take first place with a win in our only B Division game of the day.

*Nick Lavella (unlisted) is tied with his father Big John as both have 6G 4A on the season

Karson Steckler looks to have first place locked up in points (12G 10A) however we have a four-way race for second place. Petrini (11G 6A), Rios (9G 7A), Joe P (11G 5A), and Tom C (9G 7A) all have a chance with their one game to play in hand. If either Joe P or Petrini scores a hat trick, they will take the goals crown from Cowbell captain Mike Steckler who currently sits at 13.

This was the Cale Bowman performance the Fridge Raiders expected when selecting him 3rd overall in the A-League draft. The best goalie in CSHL this season by GAA (1.70) Cale’s 11th game was surprisingly his first shutout. CSHL newcomer Sam Wood filled in as a substitute for the Fridge Raiders with two assists and a third star runner added to LeVigne & Arkus combo made the Fridge Raiders a complete force.

Sam Wood won the NBHL’s Pacific Northwest MVP award this past season playing defense and captaining the Seattle Cold Snacks. He’ll slide nicely into the top tier of CSHL players. Arkus added a couple of goals in this one to kick off his huge weekend.

Listen, the Wieners aren’t beating the Mullet Men, they aren’t a fast team and Jon Hotch is out with a hurt wrist. We’ve seen this matchup four times this season and it’s now 21-4 in favor of the Mullets. This should have been Gonzo’s second shutout of the season but the Mullets forgot to guard JY with two minutes left in the game. Captain Jack was a Chetta deflection away from a hat trick as he & Helsinki finished with two goals a piece.

Bobby Arkus is looking HEALTHY as hell just in time for the playoffs as he had a 3G and an apple in this one to finish his day with 5G & 1A. Arkus scored a couple sweet goals in this one including a slick finish off the bottle in the 3rd.

This game could've taken a different turn except for heroics by Cale in net earning himself a CSHL INSIDER Save of the Year contender.

Scott Urquhart put his first goal of the season and Bateman put in two with under a minute left to make this close but the Fridge Raiders held on in to earn their second victory on the day.

*Editor's Note: This would have been GOTW except the near-side camera went out

Late-period gaffes cost the Mullets here as the Bombers scored with 50, 10, and 25 seconds left in the three periods. We saw Gonzo wall Greco with his glove a couple of times before he finally broke through.

Jack Ingalls put his stamp on this one scoring his second of the game and the should-have-been game winner with 1:35 left yet however there’s not stopping the Bombers once their goalie is pulled.

With around 45 seconds left Chris Ward inexplicably passed the ball back towards his defense instead of dumping for a change and it allowed Matt Henry open in the high slot to bury a pass from Greco against the gassed Mullet Men. Henry finished with 3 points on the game.

Week 8 matchup to watch: Huntersville Hooligans at Mighty Mullet Men - Both teams control their destiny this weekend. If the Mullets get a point out of this one, they get first place in the A Division. The Fridge Raiders have a chance to finish in first place however they need the Mullets to go 0-2 in the process.

McKenna has the goals & points (16G 9A) locked up with the lengthy Mullet Men duo of Hotch (11G 8A) & Helinski (7G 12A) probables to hit 20 points on the season.

ONE WEEKEND UNTIL PLAYOFFS!!!

CSHL hosted our semi-annual golf outing at Warrior golf club last Friday. Check out this electric interview from Putting Contest Champion Ken Reischmann.

A little background from Greco:

Pal Calice was the leader before the heavens opened up. Also more background = I have called 2 too-many-men calls on Ken in the past 2 weeks of roller games. He is still SOUR about it.
