CSHL Newsletter #6: The Almost Winter Classic

The first Saturday of each December is a special one for Charlotte Street Hockey as it hosts the Almost Winter Classic each year. Lou Harvatin, the Godfather of CSHL, created this tournament in 2011 to celebrate the inception of the league on the anniversary of our first-ever game played. The AWC is the CSHL’s longest-running

tournament and is back at Waymer Park on our new hockey facility.

Registration will open soon and fill fast. Stay tuned for updates for CSHL's biggest tournament yet!

Last year's winners: Two for Instigating, captained by goalie James Hotchner

Let's dive into the action from this high-scoring bout as the High Voltage went for their fourth straight tie and sixth of the season. There's tons of top-end talent in this matchup; veteran players who have played high-level ball hockey all over the country and relative newcomers to the game who will move up to CSHL's A Division next season. Watch the video, it's a shorter edit using both cameras to capture all the action.

Yes, I know it was week five, error on my end & will change. Thanks Nick Petrini for cutting this bad boy up!

Here are some Words From Worters^TM on this matchup and CSHL's analytics department":

This week we are introducing Game Score to the CSHL! This method is not unique to the CSHL but has been adapted and employed in various professional hockey leagues and organizations to assess player performance. It offers a standardized and more comprehensive way of gauging player contributions. However, it's essential to note that the specific metrics used and their weights will vary from league to league. Ours is completely unique; since our data is hand-tracked and only includes metrics that can be accurately observed.

Above is a stacked bar chart to visually break down each player's game score. The story of the game is the top-heavy contributions of Nick Petrini and Joe Petrellese versus the well-rounded High Voltage team. Five of the bottom six Game Scores from the game belonged to the Charlottans, who each found their own unique way of getting on the score sheet. They will need more from their depth players as they climb toward the top of the B-division rankings.

"Game Scored," is designed to calculate a score for a hockey player's performance in a game. To make it more understandable, let's break down each element and its weight in the calculation:

Goals (x5): Goals are the most significant contributor to a player's Game Score. Each goal scored is worth 5 points. Assists (x4): Assists are also vital in scoring, and they are valued at 4 points each. Shots (x1): The number of shots a player takes during a game is a valuable metric, but not as impactful as goals and assists. Each shot taken is worth 1 point. Shot Attempts (x0.5): Shot attempts represent the player's efforts to score, but they have less weight than actual shots. Each shot attempt is worth half a point. Blocks (x1): Blocks reflect a player's defensive efforts in preventing the opponent's shots. Each block is worth 1 point. Steals (x1): Steals represent a player's ability to take the puck away from the opponent, which is important in both offense and defense. Each steal is worth 1 point. Giveaways (x-1): Giveaways are considered negative actions as they involve losing possession of the puck. Each giveaway results in a deduction of 1 point from the player's Game Score. To calculate a player's Game Score for a particular game, you would add up the points they earn based on these criteria, taking into account the different weights. This formula allows us to evaluate and compare players' performances in a more detailed and balanced way, considering various aspects of the game beyond just goals and assists.

Disclaimer: Game Score is based on hand-tracked statistics, which may (likely) have some degree of human error. The model is subject to change and will be re-evaluated weekly to ensure accuracy and relevancy.

A Severely shorthanded Bombers team had no Greco, Cookie, or Benny that day. They called up Charlottans star Nick Petrini and kept this one close until Chetta put in an Ingalls rebound mid-third to take the lead. The Bombers almost tied this late as the Mullet Men were unable to clear the puck and change against the extra man but substitute goalie Nappy locked it down to keep their undefeated season alive.

Eric LeVigne's Fridge Raiders really shook things up as 3rd overall pick Cale Bowman played forward for their games. With leading scorer Bobby Arkus finding his beach they needed a jolt in scoring and have potentially the second-best goalie in the league as a runner in Tim Hickey. The switch worked as Hickey shut down the Wieners winning his first of the season and grabbing a 4-point edge over the Bombers for 3rd place in the standings. Jon Hotch scored late but it wasn't enough to take a point from this one.

The Hooligans were flying here as McKenna, Malmstrom, and Dunworth completely overpowered the shorthanded Bombers. The Hooligans are going to be scary next week when Forbes returns and if PMart keeps putting up performances like this they're as strong as any team in the league. The Bombers need a reset so hopefully the return of 1.01 pick Greco Sunday steadies the ship a bit.

It was always the Mullet Men. Jack scored 20 seconds into this one and the the boys didn't look back. Jeremy and Ward beat Wieners goalie Danny from the neutral zone and the Mullet's legs were too much for the Wieners to handle. Tommy Knox's return gave the Wieners a much-needed edge as he provided a physical presence they sorely missed through the first 6 games. Last year's A-League champions have lost 7 in a row and don't look close to competing with the top teams this season. Congrats Bateman on his first goal of the season.

With his first shutout of the season, CSHL Insider is proud to announce Goalie Patrick Martin as our A Division Player of the Week. PMart allowed one goal all day, an incredible performance from CSHL's Mr. Irrelevant. The Fridge Raiders were dominated in this one with the asphalt tilted against them all day. Hickey played well in this one they just didn't have a chance.

This is the best we've seen the Charlottans look all season. In a game where they maybe gave up 5 SOG, the full force of Kennedy and Petrellese was in effect as they combined for all 5 goals. Jenny chipped in two assists and sits at 6 for the year. while the Steckler duo continued to look great. The return of Tyler Brown for the Cowbell will be big this weekend as their third-round pick has only been to two games so far. With 4 goals and an assist on the day, Joe Petrellese is CSHL Insider's B Division Player of the Week. Petrini took a hard fall on a trip from fellow Jets fan Cole Heslin. We're already going through enough Cole...

Without their captain Brandon Brownlow (out with an ankle injury) the NorMonsters offense looked as good as ever. Converted ice players Will Sheridan and Hill Hollowell carried the load with 2 goals each.

We saw an insane 3rd period with 6 goals total including 3 in the last 1:11 as High Voltage made yet ANOTHER late-game comeback. Nick Sevs took an uncalled stick to the face and went god mode creating chances for the Voltage while Captain Tom Carriero scored an in-crease goal with 2 seconds left.

A quiet game for Karson Steckler is rare to see but he came up empty in this one. The Cowbell created fewer chances than usual on Sunday as their transition game was stifled by the longer NorMonsters lineup. Eric May and Kendall Kerr carried the load this time as May continued his red-hot pace. Uncle Stecky put two more goals in as he now sits at double digits on the season, tied for the Division lead with Karson.

Our two current MVP favorites Zach McKenna and Karson Steckler have played together before, teaming up on the Mighty Waymer Power Rangers to win this year's Summer Slapper!

Absolutely loaded roster, their captain/GM must be a genius.
