CAROLINA CHOPS MASTERS TEAM

That’s right, the Carolina Chops are starting a masters team which will play in national tournaments moving forward. This team is ran by Tom Carriero & Joe Petrellese with the goal of playing these two tournaments in 2025:

MASTERS NORTH AMERICANS: March 21-23

BATTLE AT THE SHORE: June 20-22

It has not been decided which age range (35+ or 50+) the Masters team will compete in. If you’re interested in playing please reach out to Tom Carriero via email (Raider524@yahoo.com) or text (5162202562).

CSHL is planning a 35+ “Masters” tournament at Waymer for Sunday, January 5th to get a look at everyone in that age range playing together. Stay tuned for a registration link!

(EXTREMELY) LAZY WEEK SIX RECAP

CSHL Insider’s first ever dual-league player of the week goes to Tom Carriero, who opened our day earning the shutout in net for High Voltage then scored two goals in his last game of the day for the Riverbend Rapids. It was great to see Carriero back on the Voltage as he was their original captain the past two seasons and won the Winter ‘24 Championship with High Voltage.

CSHL Insider’s DAWGS of the Week go to Kendall Kerr’s nuts as he took a slapshot from Pete Becht right into a (confusingly) unprotected area and still managed to finish the game as the Gladiators gave the Hoolies their first loss of the season. Kendall missed the following game & rest of the season due to testicular hematoma.

Onto week seven..

We have another award to give out, our first ever CSHL Insider Chip of the Week as the Senior Editor took a perfect pass from Uncle Steck and deflected it over Hotch to tie this game with a minute remaining.

*chip of the week

Editor’s Note: Before we go into week seven, I want to thank Deven Szlachetka for all of his hard work in his first season as CSHL Insider’s Junior Editor. He’s been awesome and made my job a TON easier by handling all of the B Division game logs, predictions, and so forth. So Mike Warren when you read the last sentence of this newsletter, remember to get mad at your defenseman and not me.

SLIGHT LESS LAZY WEEK SEVEN RECAP

Going to touch on the only game that matters here, as our B Division season finished with a Voltage/Gladiators game with massive implications as the following would happen:

  • Either Win by either teams has them finish 2nd in the standings, while the loser is in 5th

  • A Tie has these teams finish 4th & 5th and they face off in the play-in round

CHARLOTTANS 4 AT HIGH VOLTAGE 4

Well.. with the tie here, it seals both team’s fates of having a rematch in the play-in game next week. At least that game can’t tie, right? Joe P is missing stud forwards Jasinski and Berg this week, so what can his Charlottans do without two vital pieces? Not entirely sure what happened for DeRosa to get the opening goal from the slot after being uncovered, but that’s how the first goal of the game was scored. Or so we thought. No goal was the call on the play. Cummings is playing well to start this one, garnering praise from Eric. The first ends tied at zero.

Vincento is able to dig deep and find a way to Dunworth in front of Drake and finally breaks the tie in the second. Joey makes a sliding shot from a JD pass to tie this game a few minutes later. Refs Allan and Bobby come to the broadcast booth to jinx these two teams to tie after talking about the tiebreaker scenario and what each team needs after the end of the second tied 1-1.

Heitzman takes a slashing penalty to set up the powerplay for High Voltage early in the third. Doing a great job to maintain possession and in the Charlottans’ end, a Weber backhand finds a way behind ex-teammate Drake to give High Voltage the lead in the third. Drake makes an awkward save after his forwards double commit and gives Rosentreter some time and space where Kaltschnee buries the rebound giving them the worst lead in hockey. Not-so-subtle foreshadowing. 3-1 Voltage. Poor Allan is abused in the ensuing faceoff. I’d donate my torn ACL if it would help him in any way, but we move on.

Joey camps out in the slot unattended, but the rebound he creates is buried by JD Henderson closing the gap to a more attainable one. Joe P ties the game off a long wacky play where he tries to do literally everything, and finally is able to bury it 3-3.

Editor’s Note: Joey P got a tip on this

Not 15 seconds later, the trio of Kaltschnee, Rosentreter, and DeRosa crash the net and bury one, giving them the advantage 4-3. In an absolute bananaland minute and a half of hockey, Joe fucking P shoots one from his goal line and it finds its way behind Cummings tying it AGAIN at 4. The score remains just that and the Raptors (probably none in attendance) can finally breathe a breath of fresh air and not have to play the play-in game, where these two teams will have a rematch.

⭐️ Joe fucking P 1-1-2 GTG

⭐️⭐️ Mark Kaltschnee 2-1-3

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Joey Petrellese 2-1-3

HM: The Raptors for not having to play the play-in game w/ HV/CLT/LR tied in the standings

Before we head into the playoff portion of the newsletter let’s take a look at final standings & leaders for both our A & B Divisions.

B DIVISION FINAL STANDINGS

B DIVISION FINAL LEADERS

A DIVISION FINAL STANDINGS

A DIVISION FINAL LEADERS

Six teams in our A Division means two will get eliminated before the double-elimination portion of our playoffs, let’s dive into the action.

PLAYOFFS: A DIVISION PLAY-IN

WAYMER WIENERS 2 AT JJ’s BOMBERS 3

Ina matchup between CSHL Original Four^™ teams, we see Bateman & Campbell face off in elimination games for the third season in a row. The Wieners were short-handed in this one as Petrini, JP & Janiga were missing while Sevs was out for the Bombers & this game started flat as neither team had a goal or penalty in the first. There was a lot of stretch passing from these teams as both conserved energy however the Bombers couldn’t turn their chances into a goal.

Gonzo opened the second by sending Bateman down harder than a giant sequoia as we finally saw some action, however, the Bombers were able to kill it off. Shortly after Bateman passed out of a double team and stock buried one from the deep point through traffic at the net as the Wieners went ahead 1-0. Williams quickly beat Nappy with a wrister from the slot and this one was tied heading into the third.

Turmenne picked top right bins after an exhausted Wieners team left him open in the near slot to give the Bombers the lead. Stock tripped Campbell behind his net and the Wieners killed off the penalty on no legs leading to a lapse in defense by the Bombers where Wood was able to walk in and score to tie things up. With time running down, Knox & Thompson collided in the corner sending Benny into the boards which wasn’t called. Williams took advantage of the numbers game by finding Campbell for a one-timer and a GWG that sends his Bombers into the next rounds of CSHL playoffs.

RIVERBEND RAPIDS 4 AT GLADIATORS 3

Two teams that have spent all season shorthanded were (almost) full strength as the only rostered player missing was Kendell Kerr. The game started with the Gladiators having a handful of chances in the first four minutes however McKenna was able to get possession behind the net and find Jayden open in the shallow slot as three players were fixated on the 1.01 pick. Shortly after Lavella collected a missed pass to the slot and threw a waist high pass to Cookie which he knocked down and batted past Cale for a 2-0 lead going into the second.

The Gladiators started the second with a flurry of chances mostly from Q and Marshall as they both got into their game. Midway through the period Steck stepped up to the faceoff circle, won it back to Kincaid who put it on frame and Marshall finished the rebound backhand to close the gap, then Lindvall gloved down an Evans shot and buried it from the gray to tie this thing up.

Danny made some huge saves this period to keep it even, and Pinto opened the third by ringing one off the crossbar as momentum started to shift for the Rapids. Lindvall collected an errant shot and dropped one to Q who circled around the point and scored through traffic to give the Gladiators the lead with 6:23 remaining. After being slashed, high sticked, and cross-checked Marshall decided to almost murder Pinto and put carried him about 15 feet into the corner. He received a double-minor for roughing while Evans collected a third-man in to give the Rapids a man advantage. On the ensuing powerplay, McKenna found a sliver of space and put a laser past Cale to tie the game.

With a minute fifteen left, the Gladiators put Steck in the circle for a much-needed offensive zone faceoff win and, well we’ll let the final sequence speak for itself.

McKenna to Lavella GWG. The Rapids killed the last minute and advanced to the double-elimination round.

SEEDING DAY GAME NOTES: A DIVISION

Vibes from the Rapids didn’t stay high for long as they ran into the wall known as the Mighty Mullet Men.  Pinto is in prime Playoff Pinto mode as he got sent off for a combo roughing/boarding/crosscheck call on Ryan Thomas. This one wasn’t close after the first and the Mullet Men won 5-1.

With the Bombers & Hoolies tied going into the third, the Hoolies beat the brakes off of them as they scored 5 goals in 6 minutes, starting with this sweet Forbes goal.

Cole Heslin wins CSHL Insider Bozo of the Week for hitting Pete Becht in the head with his stick, then complaining & throwing his stick, getting a double-minor where the Hoolies scored two goals on the PP. We have an epidemic in CSHL of players hitting other players in the head with their sticks, then complaining to the refs when a penalty is called - which is BANANAS. Keep your stick down. 6-1 Hooligans.

Up to this point the higher seed won every game so far in the A Division bracket so it was no surprise when the Mullets won this game 6-3 over the Hoolies after getting ahead 4-1 by the middle of the second.

This team is a wagon but we’ll have to see if they can reverse the curse of Mullets past as they have lost the single-elimination championship game each of the past two seasons after starting the playoffs 2-0.

SKILLS CONTEST: A DIVISION

CSHL will have two skill contests for the first time ever after our award ceremonies this Sunday: Hardest Shot and Fastest Runner.

Editor’s Note: We are officially naming the new CSHL skills contest the Andy Zachowicz skills contest as his radar gun is allowing this to happen. Shoutout Andy who made a special appearance on Pine Talk with Palmetto and Pine Golf this week and is our resident CSHL Director of Golf.

CSHL captains will nominate one participant for each of these events, let’s project who each nominee is & the final top three each event.

FASTEST RUNNER

Mullets - Sean Byrnes

Hoolies - Connor Malmstrom

Bombers - Jesse Turmenne

Rapids - Chris Cookingham

Gladiators - Alex Lindvall (or whoever is available this weekend)

Wieners - Sam Wood

Prediction: Well my prediction would be Nick Severins but I don’t think Sevs will get the nominee from Campbell and we will see Jesse…who will come in second. Healthy ankle Sevs gets first in this.

  1. Cookie

  2. Jesse

  3. Byrnes

HARDEST SHOT

Mullets - Jack Ingalls (...or Caleb)

Hoolies - James Forbes

Bombers - Cole Williams

Rapids - Zach McKenna

Gladiators - Mike Steckler

Wieners - Jim Bateman

Prediction: McKenna runs it up near triple digits depending on how close the shot is. Bateman makes an entrance into the top 3 if he has under 5.5 beers before the contest.

  1. McKenna, 98 MPH

  2. Forbes, 95 MPH

  3. Bateman, 92 MPH

PLAYOFFS: B DIVISION PLAY-IN

Junior Editor’s Note: Looking back at my predictions of B playoffs, what a dumpster fire. Nobody let me make predictions again,  because I am 0-4 at the end of the opening weekend playoffs. At this point, I’m going to channel my inner 10-year-old self 2008-09 Lions and aim to be perfectly winless for predictions. As a Rats player, I am beyond delighted and happy to be wrong, but oh boy does it show I don’t know shit.

HIGH VOLTAGE 2 at CHARLOTTANS 3

The rematch from last week’s thriller in the final seconds with some actual consequences and the chance to add a second notch to the rivalry belt in two weeks. The first period sets the tone for the majority of the games in B today, where it’s mostly a defensive matchup and not much offense generated. Both goalies have a great start and we complete the opening frame tied at 0.

Rosentreter serves the too-many-men penalty for High Voltage. Joey slides into DeRosa, drawing a tripping before the penalty expires for Voltage, so we play 3-on-3 for a short period of time before a shortened Voltage powerplay. The powerplay for Voltage looks to be great, with plenty of shots on Drake, but he is able to withstand them all and we return to 4-on-4.

We see a kerfuffle drift to center court after some extra pokes at the puck where Drake froze the ball bent down. Joey comes in to show his support for his goalie, and has some words for Dunworth, on the way out Kaltschnee has something to say to Joey, and Joe has something to say to Kaltschnee. A crowd forms and I can’t see anything else. Both captains have words for each other, and we end up having no penalties and resume play.

Joey ends up taking a tripping penalty the very next play on Rios. Placido blocks a Rosentreter slapshot off the helmet and Sam retrieves the rebound where he floats one top shelf past Drake breaking the tie at the end of two 1-0 Voltage.

Bad blood between Vincento and Joe P to begin the third sees another Charlottan powerplay, but a plethora of dumps and good possession from High Voltage sees this killed off. Rios gets the ball to Dunworth who rips one from just outside the faceoff dot in the Charlottan zone to extend their lead to two. Joe P didn’t take too kindly to that, as we see him walk just inside his own blue line and send a curveball at Cummings and finally solves the Voltage netminder and closes the gap to 1.

A Placido bank pass to Joey has the ball trickle behind Joey, Rios, AND Cummings, where Placido buries it and holy shit this game is tied.

Joe P does Joe P things and sends another one from beyond his blue line and goes top shelf giving his team the lead with less than 2 minutes to go. 4 minutes and 3 goals from his team has to fire them up.

High Voltage pull Cummings before the ensuing faceoff for the extra attacker, but it is in vain. The Charlottans eliminate High Voltage in the play-in game 3-2 after three unanswered goals late in the third.

⭐️ Joe Petrellese 2-0-2

⭐️⭐️ Michael Placido 1-0-1

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Sam Rosentreter 1-0-1

HM: Both goalies for playing their asses off

SEEDING ROUND: B DIVISION

CHARLOTTANS 0 @ FLYING V’s 4

Definitely wanted a closer game than this considering the Charlottans were the only team to hand the V’s a loss during the regular season. Of course the biggest hurdle for the Charlottans today was the play-in game. Despite the result of this game, they can leave today with their heads held high while they prepare for next weekend for their shot at their first B division title since F23.  Conversely, the Flying V’s look for their first ever championship in their second season of CSHL play as a franchise as they replaced (rebranded?) the NorMonsters in W24.

The game starts with a LaFond faceoff … loss ? To Placido of the Charlottans. Some wacky stickwork between two Charlottans and a V player has this come to center court where LaFond was waiting for it and gloves it down for a shot on net. We see early on that Captain Brownlow wants Eddy Ippolito to shadow Joe P much to the Charlottans’ dismay. We see plenty of time on both ends of the court with long range shots and not much more thus far into the tilt. A JD Henderson partial breakaway has the best showing of an offensive chance in the game to this point, but LaFond is barely a half step behind with a good stick and Brownlow’s momentum carries him into his net to save the potentially loose ball. A streaking Brownlow is found after the ensuing faceoff and he rips it past Drake from outside the faceoff dot to score the opening goal of this game.

Mahoski makes a few great saves on numerous Charlottan players to close the opening frame of this tilt in favor of the V’s 1-0

Opening the second, we see the familial connection that we call Brainstorm (if you hear green needle, you’re wrong) sneak one to the slot where a confused Charlottans’ D left Daniel open and squeeze one past Drake.

We see Mike Rudolph (!) win the faceoff and it finds its way to Brownlow who leaves it for LaFond who sends it back to Brownlow who rips it on cage where Rudolph is waiting for the rebound and buries it quickly putting this game more and more out of reach for the Charlottans.

The second ends 3-0 in favor for the V’s after not much else of note happening aside from saves either way. Brandon Brownlow puts the exclamation point on this game from the blue line by a pass from Ippolito via a faceoff win from LaFond. Joey P was almost able to close the gap and get the block, but he needed a half a second more.

The V’s continued to play the rest of the third with energy behind them and hold possession for the good part of the rest of the game. It ends in a 4-0 playoff shutout for Mahoski and the Flying V’s.

⭐️ Brandon Brownlow 2-1-3 GWG

⭐️⭐️ Andrew Mahoski (G) SO

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Mike Rudolph 1-1-2

HM: Mrs. Petrellese for not hunting the junior editor down

LATTA RAPTORS 1 at RIVER RATS 2

This one starts out with a dealer’s choice of the following: good defense OR offensive jitters.  Lee Kuveikis has a great look out front, but a good defensive stick by Cynthia Clay and paddlework from captain Harris sends it out to Burns for the clear.

A terrible, horrible, no good, very bad clear by yours truly sees Wayne Witzigman bury the roller out front to give the Raptors the lead in the opening period. The period closes with some dumps and defensive play for a score of 1-0 Raptors. The Raptors’ D gives Rich Wall juuuuuuust a bit too much space in the slot where he buries a Karson pass with Bowser behind the net causing the D to become confused and pull just that little bit away from Rich. The second period ends tied at 1 with a metric ton of defensive play from both sides on top of great play from the goaltenders. The third opens up fast, as the Raptors faceoff win finds its way to the side of Burns and the telegraphed slapshot is blocked in the Rats end and sent out to Karson at center. Still, these defensively minded teams continue to battle it out.

A Colin Barrier shot is cleared from in front of Harris directly to Captain Mike Warren, who shoots one off Terjesen’s groin and temporarily stuns him, giving him the time to walk to his own blue line and shoot one five hole on Harris to break the tie.

As the clock winds down, the Raptors pull Harris for the extra attacker with decent success as they are able to maintain possession and get quality chances. Unfortunately for them, there’s neither enough time nor chances and the River Rats take this game 2-1.

⭐️ Mike Warren 1-0-1 GWG

⭐️⭐️ James Borruso (G)

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Nick Harris (G)

HM: Rich Wall 1-0-1 / Wayne Witzigman 1-0-1

2OT RIVER RATS 2 @ FLYING V’s 1

This is probably the most evenly matched game these two teams have played against each other despite Karson’s injury/sickness (can confirm he is indeed sick with it).

Nick Russell concedes the opening faceoff to LaFond, and hounds down Rudolph in turn to not give him the time or space he’s gotten throughout the majority of the season. As today has shown, defensive play is the name of the game here. Many shot blocks, man on man coverage, sticks in the way, you name it. Chances both ways with the goalies standing the tests, as we go into the second tied at nil.

For some godforsaken reason, the V’s leave Karson in front of Mahoski alone ????????? Sure, he’s not playing at 100%, but that doesn’t mean this kid can’t score. I mean he doesn’t score, but Matt Bowser sure does on the rebound to break the tie giving the Rats the 1-0 lead. I swear the games are good to watch, it’s just back and forth shot blocking then chances following. We go into the third with a 1-0 lead for the Rats.

A high-effort play by Matt Stecher is rewarded from a LaFond shot via Rudolph and ties the game around midway into the third to set up an exhilarating finish for a pass to the championship finals this upcoming weekend. The V’s are trying to create one timers and quick shots in the slot, but the Rats’ defense is on top of them. Thank god the entirety of the regular season means little to none at this point. The Rats look to be mostly at full power when it matters most. While on a partial 2-0 for the Rats and an ill-timed change from the V’s, Ippolito takes a trip on Karson to set up a late game powerplay for the Rats. The V’s are able to play what looks like an even strength play where they kill it with relative ease. The Rats call their timeout while in their zone and it sets up an exhilarating finish to the game. LaFond, Brownlow, and Rudolph come out for the draw, but the Rats are able to beat Brownlow to the ball and take it down to the V’s end.

Regulation ends with the Rats in the V’s end and a chance on Mahoski from Karson.

(Playoff) overtime rules are as follows: 5 minutes of 4v4 sudden death, and each following overtime is 3v3 sudden death to my knowledge.

OVERTIME

Matt Bowser is having himself a game, where we find him pressuring the V’s defense like we haven’t seen throughout the regular season. The V’s are making some nice passes but just can’t connect with the back of the net. Speaking of, Rudolph is almost able to end the game, but just shoots wide. The opening overtime period ends after confusion as to where the faceoff should be following a few shot blocks from the Rats.

The V’s are getting some decent shots off from the slot, but really just can’t finish. Whether that’s from defensive positioning from the Rats or just inaccuracy, that we will truly never know. A shot from LaFond that goes wide finds Karson along the boards where he takes it down to the V’s end with two chasing members and brings an end to this insanity in 2OT.

⭐️ Karson Steckler 1-1-2 GWG

⭐️⭐️ James Borruso (G)

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Andrew Mahoski (G)

HM: Matt Bowser 1-0-1 / Matt Stecher 1-0-1

SKILLS CONTEST: B DIVISION

I don’t have an official list of entered players, but if I were the captains of these teams I’d choose these players with the following reason(s):

Charlottans

Fastest Runner: Joey Petrellese

Seemingly able to be everywhere and sliding to do it, Joey narrowly takes my bid over Ray Jasinski. Both displaying their wheels for NBHL’s Carolina Copperheads this past season, both have the legs to compete.

Hardest Shot: Joe Petrellese

I don’t think this is any (if at all) surprise. With the ability to score from behind his own goal line, Joe P’s shot is the epitome of ‘hardest shot’, not much more needs to be said.

Flying V’s

Fastest Runner: Mike Rudolph

He just doesn’t run out of gas. I guess having to keep up with a child will do that to you, but he can be the forechecker and backchecker on the same play. Unreal wheels he has, and it’s great to play with and a crux to play against.

Hardest Shot: Mike LaFond

Taking one off the kibbles ‘n bits this past weekend from him, I don’t have much other choice. Thank god I was wearing protection. He will not second guess to rip a slapshot from hell, but entirely possible to shoot it through people using his wrister.

High Voltage

Fastest Runner: Sam Rosentreter

Hard working, long-legged Sam flies up and down the court with ease. Silky hands too? Definitely a forward you want on your team.

Hardest Shot: James Weber

Sure, he’s more so known for his defensive play. Between him and the commissioner, they can both let it fly. A MVD candidate to top it off, Weber’s shot is not to be trifled with.

Editor’s Note: This is an INSANE choice

Latta Raptors

Fastest Runner: Chetta Narach

I’ve found myself many times in my two seasons playing against Chetta looking at him coming onto the court, blinking, and having him behind me near my goalie. Beachy AND Wayne are both great choices in terms of speed, but I think Chetta has the edge. Captain Harris has many quick legs to choose from.

Hardest Shot: Marques Guia

His four goal game earlier this season from the blue line solidifies the slapshot he has. The accuracy on top of it all is the cherry on top for the Raptors’ blueliner.

River Rats

Fastest Runner: Nick Russell

One of the few runners to hound Rudolph and keep up, Russell must enjoy playing a round of 18 holes in 2 hours to get two games in. Watching him and Karson cook from the bench is chefs kiss

Hardest Shot: Rich Wall

Some theorize the Wall family name comes from their careers in the destruction of walls. Rich just so happens to continue doing it with a stick and ball. Not afraid to let it fly from anywhere, it can find its way to the net.

CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND PREDICTIONS

Charlottans @ Raptors

This one is a tossup for me. Charlottans are 1-0-1 +1 GD against the Raptors, so this can go either way. I like Joe P in the playoffs and take the Charlottans if they have someone not as effective as Eddy Ippolito covering Joe.

Charlottans @ Flying V’s

Honestly, it didn’t matter who won the previous game, I’m undoubtedly taking the V’s either way. They’re just too damn good to not win it all. I still like Joe P in the playoffs, but Eddy Ippolito has been too successful covering Joe P as of late.

Flying V’s @ River Rats

Again, the V’s are too good to not win it all. It would be a tragic disservice to have as much success as they did throughout the regular season and falter in playoffs. Some bad puck luck last week, and I think they spent the week stewing, trying to find solutions for their special spot.

SENIOR EDITOR PREDICTION: Brandon Brownlow wins his first championship as captain of the Flying V’s
