CSHL Newsletter #11: Winter is Coming

We’re seeing some changes to the CSHL as 2024 brings our largest season yet: Our Adult Ball Leagues are expanding to a record-high 10 teams overall, and we have a major (and controversial *eyes emoji*) captaincy swap with Fridge Raiders captain Eric LeVigne taking his team down to the B Division this season.

Our new A Division team is the Riverbend Rapids captained by former Wieners, Fridge Raiders, and Bombers speedster Chris Cookingham. After 3 homes in 2 years he’s finally putting his roots down and leading his own team, it was interesting to see the type of player Cookie targeted for the inaugural Rapids, more coverage on that later.

It’s also important to note that Cookie is CSHL’s new CAO and is now a member of our Executive Board. He is also in charge of the referees so please direct any complaints at him and not our dear COO Robert Arkus.

We asked around the league how a full season at the Waymer Hockey Rink impacted draft strategy for Winter ‘24, and these were some of our answers:

"Minimal impact at best. I think the draft goes the same way regardless of where games are played." - NBHL Coach

"There was a strategy? Seemed more BPA" - League Office Member

"Doesn't feel like it really did. There weren't a ton of big changes which is surprising when you see guys like JY being kept. I love me some JY - but in a bigger rink I feel like a high price should be placed on speed." - JY's biggest hater

"Not as much as you would think." - A League Captain

"I think last season proved that maybe prioritizing goalies maybe isn't the best strategy. The #1 and #2 picks overall both ended the season last and 3rd respectively." - B League Captain

"I don't think it had a major impact. But there was a small adjustment in a move away from people that can win small battles to people that can win in space and understand the game a bit more." - A League Captain

"Not that much. The space opens up passing lanes and makes it harder to defend everyone. Ultimately however the impact players are still the impact players." - Elite Defenseman

Both divisional drafts had the captains (C) select two rostered players from the Fall ‘23 season as keepers (K), let’s dive into the drafts.

Head Wiener in Charge Jim Bateman had, unfortunately, the first pick in this draft as his Waymer Wieners came up short last season. Batemen kept potent scorer & his best bud JY along with star defenseman Jon Hotchner which gave them a lot of flexibility with the first pick. There were two elite players on the board with forward Nathan Hans and defenseman Sam Wood available and the Wieners selected the Canadian Nathan Hans 1.1 to give Jim an elite winger to play with.

Hans won a Winter ‘23 championship with the Wieners and with JY’s supposed shift to defense this year this gives their team a potent starting four. Even with Hans’ insane skill set, it’s surprising to see the Wieners pass on more Wood here. One elite scorer from A league said Hans over Wood was the most surprising pick in the draft:

"I know Hans is elite when it comes to scoring - but how could you pass up the irony of Wood being a Weiner?" - Elite A Division Forward

JJ’s Bombers were CSHL Insider’s preseason pick for first place last season, so their lackluster results were a surprise.  Captain Mike Campbell wasted no time with the easiest selection of Winter 24, grabbing CSHL newcomer Sam Wood, who relocated from Seattle during the CSHL Fall season, at 1.2.

Sam pairs nicely with Campbell’s keepers Josh Greco & Caleb Brownlow, allowing the lineup a ton of flexibility as Campbell's team can play all over the rink. Campbell should see a LOT of chances in front of the net as his Bombers will control the majority of possession & are much more athletic than last year. This may be the year the Mike Campbell disrespect ends and he’s seen in the category of players equal to his point output.

Chris Cookingham had a difficult decision with his keepers and went with forwards Bobby Arkus and Ryan Prusia. Arkus was a lock at keeper but with F23 MVG Cale Bowman sitting out this season, there wasn’t really a great option for the Rapids' second slot. Prusia was a surprising selection over now goalie Tim Hickey but per sources, Cookie wanted to lock up scoring for his second unit and figure out defense later. In a pick that was confirmed to CSHL Insider the week before the draft, the first pick in Riverbend Rapids franchise history is forward Zach Olivas at 1.3. We reached out to Captain Cook for insight on this selection:

"SPEED. Plus he’s a never give up kinda guy with good defensive instincts and experience producing alongside one of the players already on the roster at the NBHL level with the Rise last year. I also really hate playing against him." - Cookie

Jack Ingalls and the Mighty Mullet Men were up fourth following a disappointing loss in the championship after a dominant regular season. Ingalls kept the elite duo of D Andrew Sernus & F Kevin Helinski, and this pick was all about seeing which of their partners returned as Jeremy Hotchner and Pete Becht were both on the board. With Jack preferring to play defense on the smaller Waymer Rink that meant the return of breakout star & Fall '23 MVF finalist Jeremy Hotchner with the Mullets pick at 1.4.

The Helinski-Hotch pairing dominated F23 as their length was unbearable for other teams.

Many felt that the Hoolies and James Forbes started this draft at 5 as there wasn’t much insight on any potential selection going into draft night. Reigning MVP Zach McKenna was a no-brainer choice at keeper, and with defenseman Frank Lozzi taking off this season (congrats on the baby!) the Hoolies captain kept blazing forward Connor Malmstrom. There were four options here as returning Hoolie Andy Zachowicz was available along with Becht on the defensive end, while Ethan Pinto & Quinten Heinly were on the board as forwards. Forbes showed loyalty and brought back Zachowicz with the 1.5 pick who per sources is in “the best shape of his life”.

The Wieners were always going to have options here and selected the aggressive Ethan Pinto at 2.1. While a great pick as Pinto is extremely talented, in hindsight they may regret selecting a forward as Jon Hotchner hurt his LCL and will miss at least half of the season. We also hear that Gerry Luff is questionable with a shoulder injury... The Bombers were ecstatic Pete Becht fell to 2.2 and selected him rounding out the most balanced top 5 of any team. Becht is an elite defensive defenseman and will allow Brownlow & Wood to push up the rink and play more aggressively with the ball.

The Rapids stuck to their speed trend with the selection of Jayden Steckler at 2.3, this gives Prusia a fast partner to play with on the second line. Jack brought back Chris Ward (elite pick - unbiased opinion) with the 2.4 pick as the Mullets return five pieces of their core from the F23 season. With the final selection in round two, Forbes and his Hoolies swung for the fences with the last pick of the 2nd selecting superstar talent Q at 2.5. Q is a top 10 CSHL talent and adding him to their core gives Forbes’ squad a plethora of scorers at their disposal.

The third round saw our first goalie go as the Mullets stole Tim Hickey at 3.4, while the other 4 picks were inexperienced players with upside as they all have played under 2 years of hockey in their lives. At 4.5 the Hoolies selected Ashley Mouzzon who became the first woman in CSHL’s A Division! We love what the Bombers did late selecting Keenen Steckler at 4.2 and Bill Evans 5.2.

After two unsuccessful seasons in the B Division, NorMonsters captain Brandon Brownlow decided it was time for a change as his team is now the Flying Vs. CSHL Insider asked Brownlow’s reason for change:

"I didnt have any connection with the NorMonster name so it was easy to want to change it... Its a jumbled up mess of scattered ideas reaching in desperation for a servicable team name and it barely worked. I wanted to change it last season but I was too slow coming up with a new name and color pallette. I was thinking back to the old days playing in CSHL & one of the first "league" teams I was ever on was the Flying Vs back in 2012 at the Morrison YMCA. I thought it would be cool to bring back that name with a fresh new logo. It's definitely more of a hockey reference name as well... Plus, orange is my favorite color so that also encouraged the change. I'm actually not a fan of the Mighty Ducks movie, so it had nothing to do with that. I didn't watch the movie as a kid, so watching it for the first time as an adult with no nostalgic connection to it just made it really corny. I appreciate other captains in the league being willing to adjust their teams color pallettes so the Flying Vs were able to come to fruition. Thanks to Benny for cooking up numerous brand new absolutely incredible logos over this off season, he's been putting in WORK. I'm excited to see if this change can bring a new mentality to my squad and give us something to fight for." - Brandon

A+ answer from a B- captain.

There were a ton of newcomers in the B Division draft pool this year so it’s exciting for the growth of our league. Even with B expanding to 5 teams & top players like Petrini, McLane, Kerr & Nappy moving up to A, there was no lack of talent down the draft. Part of this was a last-minute decision to put the waiting list players in the B league draft pool. A slightly controversial decision, this should help mitigate the amount of sub players needed due to the constant shorthanded teams we traditionally see in the B Division.

Waymer Cowbell faltered last season after using the first pick in the draft on elite goaltender Chris Nappy who’s now up in the A division where he belongs. With arguably the CSHL’s top two youth prospects as keepers in Karson Steckler (F23 B MVP) and Cole Heslin (Making the jump to NBHL with the Carolina Copperheads), Steck leaned on experience and picked Matt Henry with the 1.1 pick to open the draft. Matt’s positional flexibility and passing should give the Cowbell a bit more possession than last season where they were primarily a dump-and-chase team.

The rebranded Flying V’s sat at the number two pick in the draft and also veered away from their Fall ‘23 strategy of goalie early. With Kendall Kerr moving up to A, Brandon Brownlow returned star defenseman Hill Hollowell who is an A-League talent and scorer Erik May who is always near the league lead in goals per game. We asked Brownlow how he feels losing his Alternate Captain.

"Shoutout to Kendall Kerr for making the jump to A league for the first time. He is going to do well. Sleeper pick for sure." - Brownlow

Star defenseman Jerry Janiga was an easy pick here at 1.2 for Brownlow which allocated the V’s Jacob Janiga in the 2.2 slot. Jerry, Hill & Brownlow combine for easily the most deadly shot trio in our B Division. Brownlow's teams typically don't make it through an entire season, and last year neither did Jerry so fingers crossed they can finish Winter '24 at full numbers.

Our newest B Division team the Fridge Raiders are trending downward over the past three seasons: Fall ‘22, A Champions; Winter ‘23 A Runner-Ups; Fall ‘23 eliminated in semis; and now in Winter ‘24 they are part of CSHL’s B Division, the first ever relegated team in CSHL history. Without keepers, Captain Eric LeVigne was allocated forwards Wayne Witzigman (returning from the Middle East) and Nick “Hockey Jesus” Harris (not the one from the Middle East) to start his roster. LeVigne played it safe and locked down his goalie Andrew Mahoski at 1.3 who last year played runner for the NorMonsters. Mahoski had an impressive showing in net at the Almost Winter Classic and this allowed the Fridge Raiders to go best player available for the remainder of their draft.

High Voltage has a disappointing end to their season. We asked captain Tom Carriero what’s the feeling in the High Voltage camp going into Winter ‘24 after losing a heartbreaker in 2OT this past B Division championship?

"The feeling is “positivity”! After coming so close last season my returning players know what it takes to get there and I’m confident we can relay that message and philosophy to the CSHL new players that I was excited to draft for this season!" - Tom C

High Voltage lost a pair of star defenseman as Nick Severins and Brad McLane to A League but still had two strong keeper options in volume scorer (and now alternate captain) Brandon Rios & future A-Leaguer Nick Lavella. With the 1.4 pick High Voltage took “Big John” Lavella as Tom looked to keep as much of his core intact as possible.

It looks like High Voltage will keep scoring again but they’ll definitely play more in their defensive zone than the F23 season.

Captain Joe Petrellese's Charlottans return as Champions of the B Division and one of his keeper slots was locked up as GWG scoring-forward was an easy choice for one slot. Joe P kept it in the family with his second keeper being Joey Petrellese, a speedster who’s going to take a jump one of these seasons. The pick CSHL Insider had mocked all along was made as Joe P selected goalie & longtime friend James Borusso at the 1.5 slot, solidifying his net after some shaky play there last season.

We’ll see how bad the Charlottans miss their third star as Nick Petrini who finished second in MVP voting last season moved up to A.

At 2.1 comes my favorite pick of the draft as the Cowbell selected Chetta Narach, who CSHL Insider would’ve taken at the 1.1 spot.

Speed absolutely kills in the B Division and buddy Chetta can fly, he’s also a previous B Division MVP and is a guarantee for 12+ goals this season. The Cowball are LOADED offensively and not done yet…

Because of their Jerry selection in the first the Flying V’s were allocated Jacob Janiga for this pick at 2.2. Jacob is worthy of this draft slot on his own as his aggressive, fast style will translate well to league play & I’d expect Jacob to be in our A Division by 2025. The V’s don’t need scoring out of Jacob, just constant pressure which fits well with their roster.

Eric LeVigne went with a previous A Division player Jason DeRosa with the 2.3 pick as the draft started to open up. DeRosa last played for the dysfunctional Winter ‘23 Hooligans team which was loaded offensively but knocked out first in the playoffs.

After High Voltage dealt with shaky goaltending all of F23 they went with a higher-upside unknown goalie in Hayden Drake at 2.4. Per sources (who would end up on High Voltage later) Drake is a good goalie with great stick-work and should be an asset this coming season.

Joe P went with another friend from up north in Ray Jasinski with the 2.5 pick in the draft. Ray subbed in B last season and was on the winning team in his first CSHL tournament the ‘23 Almost Winter Classic. Ray could have big upside here as a vet with scoring prowess and the Charlottans look to have elite team chemistry at this point in the draft.

Nick Carey was an absolute steal at 3.1 for the Cowbell who loaded up on scorers with A Division experience, Nick Russell (7.2) and Austin Wertz (8.2) were elite value picks at that part of the draft, Jenny going 8.4 was criminal as she always racks up points. There were SIXTEEN players drafted in B that haven’t played a CSHL season before so it’ll be interesting to see how they stack up against returning competition.

"Mahoski 3rd overall." - Top Tier B Leaguer
